Malone Honored with 401(k) Advisor Leadership Award

LAS VEGAS, Nev., (Mar. 7, 2011) –The American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) today announced that Michael J. Malone, founder and managing director of MJM401k in Phoenix, Ariz. and Santa Monica, Calif., received the 2011 401(k) Advisor Leadership Award during the general session of the annual ASPPA 401(k) Summit in Las Vegas, Nev.

The 401(k) Advisor Leadership Award recognizes a leading financial advisor or team for contributions that exemplify leadership, experience, and expertise in the retirement plan industry. Sponsored by Morningstar, Inc., a leading provider of independent investment research, and ASPPA, the leader in retirement education and advocacy— the award reflects the multi-faceted efforts of advisors to serve their plan sponsor and plan participant clients, act as mentors, maintain high ethical standards, and innovate in the retirement industry. Finalists were also judged on how they employ this expertise to help Americans build their retirement future through the private pension system.

Malone and finalists Joe Connell, senior retirement plan consultant at Financial Concepts, Inc., in Minneapolis, Minn., and Jim O’Shaughnessy, managing partner at Sheridan Road Financial in Northbrook, Ill were selected from nearly 100 nominations submitted by peers and colleagues in the retirement industry.

“Michael Malone is passionate about his work as an advisor—he’s a 30-year veteran of the qualified plan industry where he’s built a practice that focuses on the needs of plan sponsors and participants. As a result, he has enhanced the capacity of American workers to achieve a secure retirement. His dedication to learning and sharing industry knowledge is manifest in his credentials as a Certified Pension Consultant (CPC) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst™ (AIFA),” said Brian Graff, executive director/CEO of ASPPA.

Malone is the founder and managing director of MJM401k, an independent consultancy firm that serves 401(k) plan sponsors and committees. Prior to MJM401k, he served as a director and retirement plan consultant with both a regional and a national consulting and advisory firm. For more than 25 years, Malone has served as a national presenter on the plan design and investment aspects of pension and 401(k) arrangements, and also provided expert testimony to the ERISA Advisory Council at the U.S. Department of Labor. His 401(k) plan consulting experience covers hundreds of corporate clients and tens of thousands of plan participants. A Connecticut native, Malone received a bachelor’s degree in business and finance with honors from Providence College in Rhode Island. He resides in Phoenix with his wife, Ann, and their seven children.
